Weddings, birthdays and family celebrations are opportunities for a special outfit. They can also mean long journeys, meals and hours of play. Plan for the whole event so children can enjoy wearing what you choose.

Start with the event
Find out whether it is indoors or outdoors, how formal it is and how long you will stay. A light dress, coordinated set, jacket or waistcoat can all feel festive. The right choice depends on the child and the occasion, not on a fixed rule for girls or boys.
Try the complete outfit early
Have the child sit, walk and raise their arms in it. Check the seams, collar, waistband and fasteners. Shoes should fit and be comfortable for the amount of standing or walking expected. Keep accessories light and secure.
Plan for the meal and the play afterwards
Pack a spare top for younger children and keep delicate layers removable. A waistcoat or cardigan can come off after photographs, while a washable base outfit can stay on for cake and games. Put a small cloth and a bag for marked clothing with the things you are already taking.
Choose pieces with another life
A jacket can later go over a simple outfit; a dress can be worn with a different layer. Rewearing, altering or passing pieces on may give better value than buying only for one event. Let the child's comfort guide the final decision.
