The invitation gives you a starting point, but the timeline tells you how to dress. A ceremony, photographs, dinner and dancing may ask different things of the same outfit. Plan for the whole event, including the journey home.

Translate the invitation into a plan
Check the stated dress code and venue before choosing. A garden celebration means walking on grass; a seated dinner calls for comfort over several hours. If the invitation leaves the code unclear, ask the host. You can be respectful of the occasion without guessing what everyone else will wear.
Think about the transitions
Will you arrive in daylight and leave after dark? Will you move from an outdoor ceremony into a cooled room? A layer that is easy to remove can solve that change without hiding the outfit all evening. If the event has a long standing reception, consider how your shoes will feel before you plan the rest of the look.
Pack for the hours, not the photograph
Take only what you will need: perhaps a phone, keys, a small touch-up item and the invitation details. A bag that carries them comfortably lets you greet people without juggling your belongings. Try the entire outfit at home and walk, sit and reach in it; leave time for an alteration if something catches or pulls.
You can wear a favorite outfit again and let the event shape one change. Our dress guide covers choosing a piece with more than one use, while the accessories guide helps with specific finishing pieces. Return to the women's wardrobe guide for everyday foundations.
